The Clock Chimes

The Clock chimes six.

Silence.

The Clock chimes seven.

The phone rings.
The phone is picked up.
Praise.
The phone is placed back down.

The Clock chimes eight.

Shuffle up the steps.
The door opens.
The door shuts.

The Clock chimes nine, ten, eleven, twelve.

The door creaks.
Sneaking up the steps.
The door opens.
A scream.

The Clock chimes one, two.

Laughter.
A cry.
Hands grip.
Pants unzip.
Grunts.
A teddy bear falls.

The Clock chimes three, four.

Laughter again.
Disobedience.
A scold.
Disobedience again.
A thud.
Blood.

The Clock chimes five.

Laughter.
Down the steps.
Cans popped.
The door bangs.

The Clock chimes six.

Silence.

  1. Wow – this is amazing poetry. I will dwell on this one for some time. So much meaning packed inside. I like clocks also, but to tell a story using the hour by hour chimes is extremely inspirational. Thank you so much for sharing it with us…
